You’ll struggle to find a better sight in the summer garden than the outstretching eruptions of floral beauty that make Agapanthus such welcome additions to our beds, borders, and pots.
This Blue African Lily is a true delight, with bright green strappy leaves that form a clump, with upright stems holding the brilliant blue flowers – perfect for an ornate container, and with just a little ongoing care will last a lifetime.
The striking blue to green colour contrast is a garden classic, and one we never tire of! Easy to grow, and the blooms even make excellent fresh cut flower candidates for an indoor vase display. The foliage is a lovely sight even before the cobalt blue blooms emerge around the height of summer. What’s more, this is an all-weather thriver, tolerating conditions come rain or shine.
As an African native, these Agapanthus love a sunny spot and will actually perform best when their roots are restricted, so do not house it in a container that is too much bigger than the plant itself, only slightly larger will do!

Plants will flower better if their roots are restricted, so if growing in a pot, don't pot on into too big a container.
Leave faded flower stems to add architectural interest to your garden during autumn and winter.
Care Guide
- Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly from spring until flowering.
- Towards the end of September ease back on watering and feeding plants in containers to harden up the foliage.
- Protect plants outdoors from severe winter weather by providing a dry mulch of bark chips or straw in late autumn and move container grown plants to a frost-free place.
- Divide overgrown plants in spring but remember plants will flower better when their roots are restricted.
