The Agapanthus is a spectacular perennial that will evoke an exotic feel in your garden. You will see this popular variety across southern Europe, but be amazed as it happily thrives in your UK garden too!
‘Poppin’ Purple’ is a new reblooming variety of African Lily. Whereas most Agapanthus flower for just a couple of months in summer, this superstar will bloom continuously from June right through to September. What’s more, the flowers are truly something special, with buds that are such a dark purple that they could be called black, opening into intense violet flowers.
The semi-evergreen leaves are long, slender and strap-like, growing in low, arching clumps that allow the flowers to stand out above them on long and straight stems - a characteristic that makes them ideal for cutting for the vase.
Agapanthus will happily grow in the ground, but there are many advantages to container growing, as when their roots are restricted they can often produce even more flowers. Pot growing also makes winter protection easier.
Like all Agapanthus, ‘Poppin’ Purple’ thrives in rich, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded garden space, and they tolerate drought well. Although winter hardy, some protection will be needed during the coldest winters. Provide a thick mulch in autumn to protect the plants against the hardest frosts, or bring container grown plants under cover.
Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting.
