Product Description

Make your garden feel like a Caribbean island with this simply gorgeous Campis x Tagliabuana.

The 'Madame Galen' will provide you garden with some later season colour, flowering from August through to October, keeping the interest going into autumn with beautiful pink and green tones.

Each trumpet shaped flower is a bright shade of coral pink that are produced in loose clusters. The throat of the flower is filled with short, curved stamens, and the blooms contrast magically with the dark green, glossy, deciduous foliage. The vine is self-clinging, so needs only minimal tying in to get it started - despite its delicate appearance, 'Madame Galen' is a sturdy climber and will run up any support be it trellis, arbour, a wall or even an old tree.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Sure to be a garden favourite, this climber is a fast-growing vine which could reach a height of 10m, although can easily be restricted by pruning to size.

Supplied as an established plant in a 1L pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Grow Campsis against a warm sunny wall and provide shelter from cold winds - they need full sun to ripen the wood if they are to flower freely.

Care Guide

Planting Advice for your Campsis:

  • Grow in a sunny, sheltered site in well-drained soil.  Protect from drying winds. Plants will tolerate light shade.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the climber you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your climber in the hole at the same level at the pot, about 30cm (1ft) away from the structure that you wish it to climb up and angled towards the support.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling) and firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and  mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare advice for Campsis:

  • Hardy to -10°C, protect from cold winds as it is these that tend to cause the most damage to young plants.
  • Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser such as our Blooming Fast Superior Plant Food or fish, blood and bone, scattered at the base in early spring.
  • Campsis are fairly drought tolerant, but newly established plants should be watered in dry spells.
  • Young plants are best tied-in to supporting wires as it takes two or three years to establish a strong woody framework of branches.

Pruning Advice for Campsis:

  • Once a framework is established, usually in two to three years, spur-prune side shoots annually in late winter.
  • This involves cutting back side shoots to within two or three buds of the main stems.
  • Remove any weak growth and cut back damaged stems close to the base.
